Be More than an Entrepreneur

In my Tennessean column this week I write about the importance of defining our lives by more than what we do for a living.

We seem to create folk heroes out of entrepreneurs who expend Herculean efforts to achieve success in their businesses.

And while this is good to a point, if entrepreneurial success comes at the expense of our marriages, our families, our faith, and our friendships, it is a hollow victory.

Real success is winning on the broad front. This is tougher than making a fortune as an entrepreneur and having a screwed up private life. Can it be done? Surely the bloody minded determination and focus needed to succeed cannot square with life balance. Well, actually it is the moments of detachment that family life creates that enables the entrepreneur to regularly stand back and view his or her creation with a critical eye. This objectivity will nurture success better than the application of continuous energy and blind obsession.
