Nashville Ballet Announces Fall Performances

Contact Cathy Ratliff at 615-297-2966 ext 17 or cratliff@nashvilleballet.com for additional information.

October 1, 6 p.m.
Ferdinand the Bull
Columbia State Community College
Enjoy the hugely popular children’s ballet Ferdinand the Bull, a heartwarming tale of a mild mannered bull who would much rather sit and smell the flowers than fight. Originally published by author Munro Leaf in 1936, this story remains just as popular today. It has continued to delight generations of readers for more than seventy years, and has been translated in more that sixty languages. Today, it continues to humorously and tenderly deliver powerful messages of non-violence and individuality, just as it did when it first went to print. Choreography by Paul Vasterling and original music by Mario DeSilva. Free admission.

October 1, 3-6 p.m.
Wonderful World of Ballet
Davis-Kidd Booksellers, Mall at Green Hills
A fun-filled afternoon where your child can meet costumed dancers, hear a ballet story, learn some dance moves, face painting, balloons, crafts, games, door prizes and more! Free Admission

October 3, 10:30 a.m.
Ferdinand the Bull
Celebration of Cultures in Centennial Park
See description above.

October 13, 10 a.m.
Ferdinand the Bull
Mt. Juliet Community Center
See description above.

October 27, 6:30 p.m.
Click
Antioch High School
This ballet exposes students to the art of dance in an abstract form. Students will learn to look at a non-story ballet for the quality of its movement, the feelings that are conveyed, and the use of music as it relates to the theme of the piece. The catchy jazz score is translated visually through the choreography of Artistic Director Paul Vasterling. Does Click refer to the snappy rhythms of the music or the subtle cliques of personalities represented? Maybe it’s both! There are no wrong answers, since this abstract ballet allows each audience member to experience their own personal connection to the underlying theme of school life set to infectious music. Free admission.

Parking on Campus

As we begin another school year and address parking concerns, the Office of Campus Security has determined that both the Inman Garage and the Curb Event Center Garage are filling by 9 a.m. each weekday. Once filled, the turnover of parking there is very slow, but there is usually still parking available in the Thrailkill Garage located in the Bruin Hills Apartment complex area. This garage is available for use by commuter students and faculty/staff as well as the residential students who live there.

Construction of the Pharmacy Building and the Residence Hall has taken quite a bit of parking in that area of campus. There is still space available in the gravel lot at 15th Ave. and Acklen Ave., the gravel lot beside the old Security Building at 15th Ave. and Acklen, and what's left of the paved lot behind the Psychology Building. The section of Acklen Ave. between 15th Ave. and the construction site is also available unless otherwise blocked for construction use.

For your safety, we ask that you refrain from parking on city streets, especially on 15th Ave. or Villa Place across Wedgewood Ave. from campus. Crossing busy streets such as Wedgewood is extremely dangerous and should only be done at a crosswalk at an intersection.

Thank you for your assistance. Any questions or concerns should be addressed with the Office of Campus Security at ext. 6617.

The Belmont Writing Center opens this Tues., Sept. 8, and its fall hours are as follows:
Monday: 8 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Thursday: 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Belmont University Writing Center exists for students, faculty, and staff―all members of the Belmont community. We provide individual instruction, convocation sessions, outreaches to individual classes, and instructional materials. Of course, no one can learn all there is to know about writing from just one visit to the center or from just one composition course; writing is a complex process, and we’re committed to helping writers as they compose in different genres, for diverse audiences, and in all sorts of academic disciplines.

This semester, the Writing Center will be staffed by Dr. Sarah Bowles, Dr. Robbie Pinter, Dr. Cynthia Cox, April Hefner (M.A. English, Belmont), Gregg Hubbard (M.A. English, Belmont), Jennifer Bostwick-Owens (M.A. English, Stanford), Eric Detweiler (B.A. Belmont & M.A. English, U of Louisville), and Mark Sursavage (M.A. English, Belmont). We also welcome Denise Mabry, our new administrative assistant.

We will soon distribute handouts that include the recent MLA and APA updates!

A couple of reminders: We are not an editing service, and we will not do students’ reading, writing, or thinking for them. We ask that instructors not demand or require entire classes to visit the Writing Center for a particular assignment. To schedule a 30-minute session, please call Denise Mabry at x6241. Students should bring a copy of their written assignment to their session.
