Belmont Launches Web Site to Address H1N1 Concerns

In light of ongoing health concerns about the spread of the H1N1 flu, Belmont University has created a Web site to provide students, faculty and staff information on the best practices for preventing and managing the illness: www.belmont.edu/h1n1. This site includes links to important information on Belmont’s response to H1N1 and methods for flu prevention as well as other guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control.

Up-to-date information related to Belmont University will be available on this site. Significant updates will also be communicated via BIC and the Belmont newsline at 615-460-5000.

Take Three Steps to Fight Flu:

The Center for Disease Control is encouraging everyone to take three basic steps to fight the flu, especially the new H1N1: 1) Take time to get vaccinated; 2) Take everyday preventive actions (cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, wash your handsoften with soap and water, etc.); and 3) Take flu antiviral drugs if recommended. See the downloadable brochure below for more information.

Belmont University Health Services and university administration are monitoring the ongoing situation H1N1 flu situation. In order to provide a healthier atmosphere for the Belmont community, large containers of hand sanitizer are located in approximately 30 high traffic areas across campus. Following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Belmont asks that anyone with flu-like symptoms (documented fever over 100 degrees, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue) stay home from work or class and limit contact with others to prevent additional infections. If you have these symptoms, contact a university staff member, a residence life staff member, your physician or Belmont’s Health Services immediately.

More information can be found on the CDC Web site: www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. In addition, Belmont will update any details directly impacting the school on Belmont’s Intranet Connection (BIC) and the Belmont University News Line: 460-5000. The brochure below also offers additional information on flu prevention and response.

Men's Track and Field Invites Walk Ons

The men's track and field team welcomes the opportunity to talk with any students who are interested in "walking on" to the team. The men's Track and Field team competes indoors from December (one meet before Christmas) to late February/early March and then outdoors from mid March through May. We would only be interested in athletes who have high school varsity experience and would be interested in talking with sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers.

Interested athletes should e-mail Assistant Track Coach Dave Milner at dave.milner@belmont.edu and should provide a brief outline of their experience in the sport along with their personal best performances and the year those marks were set. More info on Belmont’s men’s track team can be found here: http://belmontbruins.cstv.com/sports/m-track/belm-m-track-body.html

Commuter Benefits for Students, Faculty and Staff

Free Commutes to/from Campus on the Bus or Train! Since 2005, Belmont has offered free transportation to campus for students, faculty and staff thanks to a partnership with Nashville’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).

BUS:
Any student or employee with a Belmont-issued ID card can ride to and from the campus without charge simply by swiping a Belmont ID through the magnetic strip reader on the top right corner of the bus’s fare box when boarding. The university is then billed for the bus trips.

TRAIN:
Belmont offers free train transportation on the Music City Star rail system, operating from Lebanon to downtown Nashville's Riverfront Park. Train tickets can be acquired at Belmont Central.

Both of these services are intended to improve the environment and relieve traffic congestion on campus, but please use these free privileges for commuting to and from campus only. Click here for more information.

Zipcars Available for Students, Faculty and Staff

Belmont will again offer two Zipcars this year for reservation to students, faculty and staff. Zipcars are a safe, convenient and environmentally friendly option for students living on campus without cars or for commuters looking for alternative transportation. Two cars are parked near the Curb Event Center Box Office and will be available for reservation online or from a cell phone. Students, faculty and staff can join Zipcar for only $35 a year, or university departments can join for $100. Low hourly reservation rates include gas, insurance, access to 24/7 roadside assistance and travel up to 180 miles. New members receive a $35 driving credit in their first month of use. When you become a member, you are sent a Zipcard, an electronic key that allows you to access and drive the vehicle. Members 18-20 can reserve Belmont’s Zipcars and members 21 and older also have access to Zipcars in Washington D.C., Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, London, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver. 'Responding to Campus Violence' Convos

This fall Belmont is launching personal growth convocations based on "Responding to Campus Violence." This program will teach students the basics of crime prevention and take critical thinking one step further. Even though students at Belmont University are more likely to experience a tornado than an active shooter on campus, taking the time to critically think about what to do should this unlikely event ever happen, reduces the chance of panic and increases the chance of survival.

It’s time to take back control. Join the Office of Campus Security’s Crime Prevention Officer to learn how to keep yourself safe and how to avoid being the victim of crime. Dates, times and locations of convos are listed below:

Mon. Aug. 31 5 p.m. Hail Hall
Tues., Sept. 1 5 p.m. Heron Hall
Wed., Sept. 2 10 a.m. MBC 4th Floor Boardroom
Wed., Sept. 2 5 p.m. Wright/Maddox
Thurs., Sept. 3 5 p.m. Kennedy Hall
Wed., Sept. 9 5 p.m. Maple Hall
Thurs., Sept. 10 5 p.m. Thrailkill Hall
Mon., Sept. 14 5 p.m. Hillside Clubhouse
Tues., Sept. 15 5 p.m. Pembroke Hall
Wed., Sept. 16 5 p.m. Belmont Commons Clubhouse
Thurs., Sept. 17 5 p.m. Bruin Hills Clubhouse

PERSONAL GROWTH CONVO AVAILABLE

Did you know that 83 percent of the incidents reported to the Office of Campus Security during the 2008-2009 school year could have been avoided by following some basic safety tips such as:
• Using locks on lockers and bikes
• Locking doors to residences even if you are inside or leaving to check the mail
• Keeping valuables out of plain site
• Taking property such as laptops with you instead of leaving them in a room unattended

Register Bicycles on Campus With Campus Security

Registration of your bicycle increases the chances of recovery if it is stolen. Often when bikes are recovered, the owners cannot be located or cannot legally reclaim their property because they do not know the serial number of the bike. Therefore, the following rules will apply:

All bicycles on campus must be registered with the Office of Campus Security at no charge. Each bicycle must display a decal issued by OCS that is affixed to the bicycle frame in a visible area. Bicycles are not to be left outside on campus during Christmas break or summer break.

Unattended bicycles are expected to be locked to a bicycle rack at all times. They are not to be left in public access areas, entrances or exits to buildings, or attached to any railings, landscaping or other areas not designated for bicycle use. Bicycles must follow the same laws as automobiles when on roadways.

Failure to register bicycle or violation of above rules will result in impoundment at the owner's expense.

Bicycle Registration
Bicycle registration is now available online through your BIC account. Log on to your BIC account, and click on the "Online Vehicle Registration" link on the right. Bicycle Decals may be picked up at the Office of Campus Security located in the Gabhart Student Center after registering your bicycle online. Before registering online, make sure you have the following information:
Bicycle Model/Style
Bicycle Serial Number (on bike frame under pedals)
Additional Information or Features (such as color, stickers, bags or baskets)
Estimated Value
Best Contact Phone Number with Area Code

Fines

Volunteer for 2009 Opening Day!

We invite faculty, staff, students and the Nashville community to join us for Opening Day on August 22, 2009 to welcome the class of 2013. This is an important day in the lives of our new Bruins, and we want you to be a part! There are three shifts and a variety of roles to help with the excitement of New Student Orientation and Move-In.

Volunteer Shifts
7:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
10:15 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
12:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

On the registration form, you will have the option of choosing from a single or double shift. Please feel free to choose which time of day is most suitable to your schedule, but know that we ask you to be present for the entire duration of the shift to which you are assigned. Please click here to register yourself or your organization, team or group for Opening Day 2009.

Roles
The Office of Residence Life and Towering Traditions New Student Orientation have created a variety of opportunities for our Opening Day volunteers to serve. We need plenty of volunteers to move our new students into the residence halls while giving them a warm smile and a "Welcome to Belmont!” We understand, however, that not everybody wants to or can move boxes.

If you need any special accommodations or considerations, please let us know. We need volunteers to help greet new families both inside residence halls and outside at our entry points. There are even opportunities to simply walk around answering questions of students and families or monitoring the water stations.

Any help you can give on this important day will go a long way!

If you need any further information, please contact Kristine Neeley, director of new student & parent programs, at kristine.neeley@belmont.edu or 615-460-8532.
