R.A.D. Class for Women

The Office of Campus Security will be hosting a R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) Class for Women starting this Saturday. The class will meet on Saturdays: May 23, 30 and June 6 from 1-4 p.m. at the Security Operations Center. The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual.

For more information on class times and how to register, visit our Web site at http://www.belmont.edu/ocs/RAD_Systems_for_Women/index.html or email Renee Ruthven at crimeprevention@belmont.edu.

Bunch Library catalog going down for upgrade

The Bunch Library catalog will be down for an upgrade the last week in May, starting Tuesday May 26. We purposely chose this time of year, knowing that the semester and graduation are over. The upgrade should take only a few days, but we will notify the campus as soon as the catalog is up and running again. We appreciate your understanding that this upgrade is planned and necessary, though we regret any inconvenience this down time may cause.

Also this upgrade should not affect searching other library resources, such as the library databases. It will only affect searching the library catalog, known as CubCat.

All Seniors and Graduate Students

After graduation... Where will you be in five, 10 or 20years from now? The Graduation Pledge Alliance (GPA) can embolden you to find employment that allows you to live out your values and work for positive social and environmental changes within your workplace.

Thousands of students at more than 100 other colleges and universities sign the Pledge around graduation time. It's completely voluntary. It enables students to connect their values with work they find personally satisfying and, equally important, work that creates a better world for others.

Check out the GPA on Facebook or at www.graduationpledge.org to learn more. Online, GPA has lots of helpful information including information on careers and internships. The student GPA committee will have a table at the back of the auditorium where you can sign Belmont’s Pledge book and receive a pledge card and pin at Graduation Rehearsal on May 15, at 10 a.m. in the Curb Event Center.

You are encouraged to sign up only if you are serious about making the Pledge since it’s completely voluntary and no one is monitored. The Belmont student GPA committee can be reached at belmontgpa@yahoo.com.

Campus Alert: Library Thefts on Thursday

Two laptops were reported stolen from the second floor of the Bunch library between 2:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Thurs., May 7. In both instances, the owners apparently left the laptops unattended for no more than 10 minutes. Keep in mind that the end of the semester is a prime opportunity for theft. As students focus on studying and packing up for the summer, we tend to let down our guard, increasing the possibility and opportunity for theft.
These incidents are under investigation.

Remember:
• DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES UNATTENDED (EVEN IF YOU WILL ONLY BE GONE FOR A FEW MINUTES)
• DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN PLAIN SIGHT INSIDE YOUR VEHICLE
• REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY IMMEDIATELY
• REPORT SUSPICIOUS PERSONS, VEHICLES OR ACTIVITIES IMMEDIATELY TO BELMONT UNIVERSITY OFFICE OF CAMPUS SECURITY!

Library Catalog Available Again

After experiencing a disc crash on May 5, the Belmont Library catalog (CubCat) is now fully functional again. A big thanks is due to Gregg Bagwell and Michael Davis for getting the hardware repaired and restoring the catalog within a relatively short period of time, given the extent of the problem. Once again, we deeply regret the inconvenience caused by this issue.

Construction Update: East Belmont Circle Impact

East Belmont Circle is scheduled to be closed for 3-5 hours on Tues., May 5 due to ongoing construction efforts. The arrival and work of cement trucks will require the closure of East Belmont Circle from the corner by the Curb Event Center loading dock to the corner of the Massey Business Center next to the construction site. Cars parked in the Pembroke lot will still be able to exit on to Wedgewood, and pedestrian traffic will still be allowed in the alley behind MBC.

This date is subject to change so please watch BIC for updates. Thank you for your continued patience and flexibility during the construction of Belmont’s new Health Sciences building and garage.

Attention Graduating Seniors--Beaman Access

As your time as a student comes to an end here at Belmont, you have a lot of things on your mind, the least of which is your access to the Fitness and Recreation areas of the Beaman Center. But many of you are not aware that your access will be deactivated shortly after graduation. To help the graduating seniors in this transition, the Beaman Center will offer each graduating senior a free three-month membership! This membership expires on Aug. 16, no matter when you get your paperwork turned in. Take advantage of this opportunity, and avoid any time period in which your card does not work. Stop by the Beaman Center today, or visit the B FIT BU blog (http://forum.belmont.edu/bfitbu/) to download the membership application.

If you have any questions, please contact Jamie Zeller at 460-6262.

Please remember, this membership expires on Aug. 16! Please take advantage of the full three months by signing up as soon as possible!
