Swine Flu Update: Thurs., April 30, 2009

We'd like to update the Swine Flu information that was shared with the campus community earlier this week. As of today--Thursday, April 30--109 human cases of the virus and one death have been identified in the United States. One probable case has been identified in Tennessee at Nashville's Harding Academy, which has led to the temporary closing of the school for seven to nine days.

Following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC,) Belmont asks that anyone with flu-like symptoms (documented fever over 100 degrees, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue) stay home from work or class and limit contact with others to prevent additional infections. If you have these symptoms, contact your physician or Belmont’s Health Services immediately.

All Belmont faculty, staff and students should adhere to the following guidelines:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough/sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread that way.

Belmont University Health Services professionals and administration officials are continuing to meet and monitor this ongoing situation. More information can be found on the CDC Web site: www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. In addition, Belmont will update any details directly impacting the school on Belmont’s Intranet Connection (BIC) https://bic.belmont.edu/ as well as on the Belmont University News Line: 460-5000.

Sylvan Park Elementary School Festival Needs Volunteers

Sylvan Park Elementary School is looking for volunteers to help work their Annual Spaghetti Fest and Kids' Carnival which is being held Fri., May 8 at the school. Their goal is to NOT have to ask parents to work the event in addition to watching their children as that can be very stressful for everyone.

They are hoping that some Belmont students and/or faculty could help by working the event. Some of the positions they need to fill include working the prize booth, face painting, midway games, as well as monitoring and taking tickets at the inflatables.

Volunteers are needed from 4:30 - 8:30 p.m., and each volunteer will be given a dinner ticket.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Tommye Maddox Working at 615-202-9288 or tommye@me.com.

Belmont University Responds to Swine Flu News

As many of you are aware, swine influenza A is receiving significant worldwide media coverage. As of today, April 29, 91 human cases of the virus have been identified in the United States, though there are no reported cases in Tennessee at this time. Belmont University Health Services professionals and administration officials are meeting and monitoring this ongoing situation.

What can you do to stay healthy? Here are the guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough/sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread that way.

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person to person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. If you get sick, the CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to prevent additional infections. Belmont University supports that recommendation. More information can be found on the CDC Web site: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

Attention Seniors

After graduation... Where will you be five, 10 or 20 years from now? The Graduation Pledge Alliance (GPA) can embolden you to find employment that allows you to live out your values and work for positive social and environmental changes within your workplace.

Thousands of students at more than 100 other colleges and universities sign the Pledge around graduation time. It's completely voluntary. It enables students to connect their values with work they find personally satisfying and, equally important, creates a better world for others.

Check out the GPA on Facebook or at www.graduationpledge.org to learn more. Online, GPA has lots of helpful information including information on careers and internships. The student GPA committee will have a table at the back of the auditorium where you can sign Belmont’s Pledge book and receive a pledge card and pin at Graduation Rehearsal on May 15, at 10 a.m. in the Curb Event Center. You are encouraged to sign up only if you are serious about making the Pledge since it’s completely voluntary and no one is monitored.

The Belmont student GPA committee can be reached at belmontgpa@yahoo.com.

Summer Gardening Opportunities at the Belmont Community Garden

The Belmont Community Garden seeks to serve Belmont and the local community through provision of individual garden plots, outreach spaces and areas of solitude. The garden, located at 1510 Compton, next to the Max Kade House, is currently under development. The mission of the garden is to model and share best practices in practical and organic gardening. This spring and summer the Belmont community garden will be offering two unique experiences for students, staff and faculty. If you are interested in either planting and maintaining your own garden on this site or assisting with the larger community garden, please see additional information below.

1) Co-op Gardens: Single garden plots are available for development by individuals or groups. These plots will be assigned on a first-come basis. Typical plot size will be 4’ x 8’ and will be ready to plant by May 2. Requirements are that you will maintain your garden May – September 2009 and that you will agree to use only organic supplements. Assistance and resources will be available for garden-newbies.

2) Community Service: Volunteers are needed to assist with preparation and planting of beds and the building of raised beds. The tentative schedule and volunteer dates are listed below:
Sat., April 18, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: Preparation of beds and building raised beds
Sat., April 25, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.: Planting community and individual beds
Sat., May 2, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: Planting community and individual beds

INTO Nashville Convo Event Dates Announced: Help fight Human Trafficking and Homelessness

University Ministries is pleased to announce two final INTO Nashville events: Sat., April 18, 8 am.-1 p.m.
Free for Life Ministries (anti-human trafficking organization) and Sat., April 25, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Campus for Human Development (comprehensive homeless ministry).

INTO Nashville is a community service opportunity and convocation package deal. Participants receive 3 hours of community service convo credit, as well as 1 Personal Growth and Professional Development credit and 1 Christian Faith Development credit, for a max of 5 total credits. This month's INTO Nashville is working with Free for Life Ministries, a vital ministry working to address a growing human trafficking problem in Nashville (4/18), and the Campus for Human Development, an innovative homeless ministry.

INTO Nashville connects students with local inner-city ministries and non-profits to introduce them to their work, their clients and to give Belmont students a chance to experience the lives of Nashville's diverse communities. Students spend part of time learning about the organization and its mission, serving alongside one another on site, and reflecting theologically and vocationally about the volunteer experience. This is a convo package opportunity, and students must participate in the entire event in order to receive any credit. Space is limited, so students MUST sign up in order to participate. Sign up is available in the Director of Outreach's office in University Ministries, or by emailing into.nashville@gmail.com. All questions can be directed to the same email.

Worship Coordinator Applications Still Being Accepted

University Ministries, with the help of the Religion and the Arts program, is accepting applications for Worship Coordinators, a high-level student leadership position that plans and implements on-campus worship services. The deadline for applications has been extended, so if you are interested, or have yet to turn your application in, please stop by University Ministries at any time!

Within the larger scope of the Worship Coordinator description are several specific positions, each of which will have its own specific area of responsibility. Some form of “audition” will be necessary for this position – either in person, audio recording, or video recording.

Creative Design Coordinators will be responsible for the physical worship spaces. They will work on creating an atmosphere that is appropriate for each worship experience, as well as attending to the logistics of setting up and tearing down any necessary equipment. Creative Arts Coordinators will be responsible for any creative component of a worship event that does not involve the physical space, like greeters/hospitality, visual arts, drama, special music, and other features.
