Summer Gardening Opportunities at the Belmont Community Garden

The Belmont Community Garden seeks to serve Belmont and the local community through provision of individual garden plots, outreach spaces and areas of solitude. The garden, located at 1510 Compton, next to the Max Kade House, is currently under development. The mission of the garden is to model and share best practices in practical and organic gardening.

This spring and summer the Belmont community garden will be offering two unique experiences for students, staff and faculty. If you are interested in either planting and maintaining your own garden on this site or assisting with the larger community garden, please see additional information below.

1) Co-op Gardens: Single garden plots are available for development by individuals or groups. These plots will be assigned on a first-come basis. Typical plot size will be 4’ x 8’ and will be ready to plant by May 2. Requirements are that you will (1) maintain your garden May – September 2009 and (2) that you will agree to use only organic supplements. Assistance and resources will be available for garden-newbies.

2) Community Service: Volunteers are needed to assist with preparation and planting of beds and the building of raised beds. The tentative schedule and volunteer dates are listed below:
Saturday, April 18, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm: Preparation of beds and building raised beds
Saturday, April 25, 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Planting community and individual beds
Saturday, May 2: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm: Planting community and individual bed
Please email Kimberlee Boggs, Associate Professor of Chemistry at boggskd@mail.belmont.edu with questions and/or interest.

Goodbye gray skies, hello blue! Happy days are here again with Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and the unforgettable "king of cool" Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli. Based on the hit television series, "Happy Days – A New Musical" reintroduces one of America’s best loved families, the Cunninghams, and the days of 1959 Milwaukee complete with varsity sweaters, hula hoops, and jukebox sock-hoppin'. His peace is rudely disturbed when his old friend Thomas Huxley arrives, closely followed by the Bishop of Oxford. And Darwin suddenly finds himself entangled in an enthralling and thought-provoking comedy about God, science and plastic surgery. You may think you know how such a discussion would go between the father of evolution and one of evolution’s most outspoken critics in his day, but you will be surprised. Take the CLA and Win Some Music!

Belmont University has taken part in a national study over the past four years called the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA). This study is valuable in helping us learn how students learn, when they learn it and the level of critical thinking skills that our graduates attain.

Think Back: Did YOU take the CLA as a Freshman? (and also, maybe, as a Sophomore?) If so, you are expected to return and complete the study THIS SEMESTER. And, if you do, you have a chance to win $50 worth of music! This was an exam that you took in your first semester that tested critical thinking skills. You most likely took the exam during your first week at Belmont, right before classes started. Some of you took it a second time, as sophomores. Either way, you should take it again! After you have completed the CLA, your name will be placed in a drawing for one of several $50 I-Tunes Gift Card!!!

How To Schedule?
We will work with you to find a time to come in and take the exam, which will take between 1.5 and 2 hours to complete. Simply contact Jennifer Wells at wellsjf@mail.belmont.edu to set up a time to take the exam.

HELP US LEARN MORE ABOUT THE BELMONT ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE. HELP US MAKE BELMONT THE BEST WE CAN!

Volunteer for Belmont Family Literacy Day April 4

Please volunteer for Belmont's 9th Annual Family Literacy Day! It's on April 4 from 1-4 p.m. in Rose Park and at the Easley Community Center there, within walking distance of Belmont's campus. We need volunteers for reading circles, usually hosted by a student organization or other group, but we also need volunteers to help out with crafts, games, refreshments, setting up, tearing down/cleaning up and helping with signing people in and directing people during the day. Sign-up forms and instructions about returning them are online at http://www.belmont.edu/sl/family_literacy_day/volunteer_sign-up_forms.html . You can specify on the forms which times and in which areas you would like to volunteer. Also, you can get community service convo credit for the hours that you volunteer.

Regarding reading cirlces, for those of you who have not participated in the past, in a reading circle a few Belmont volunteers have children's books that they read with the children who come to Literacy Day and go from circle to circle. You may want to pick some sort of theme for your group and bring children's books (ages range from K-5) related to that theme. We also encourage you to make posters that display your organization's name if you are with one and your group's theme.

It is such a fun and rewarding experience, as I'm sure many of you already know, and the kids absolutely love it. It's a great chance to give back to the community and interact with kids from the area. If you have any questions, please e-mail familyliteracyday@mail.belmont.edu. We look forward to seeing you there!

Storm Shelter Signs Placed Across Campus

Storm Shelter signs are beginning to be placed across campus to identify locations that meet one or more of the safety location requirements in the event of a tornado warning. If the sign is located on a door, the safe location is on the other side of the door. If the sign is located on the wall, the safety location is in the area around the sign. After all signs have been installed, a list of their locations will be posted online at www.belmont.edu/safety.

tornado013.jpgA Tornado Safety Location is one that:
• Has no windows
• Is on the lowest possible floor of a building
• Has no exterior walls
(When all three of these criteria cannot be met in a building, the safety location is the place that best meets them.)

Upon notification of a tornado warning, all persons should proceed to a tornado safety location inside their buildings, assisting those that need assistance and ensuring that those under their jurisdiction also go to the safety location. Whenever possible, employees will maintain an approximate head count of the persons from their areas. All building occupants are to remain in the safety location until the Tornado Warning has expired or until notified that the danger has passed.

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign up for Belmont’s text alert system at bic.belmont.edu or by texting the word Belmont to 27538.
