Battle of the Boulevard Book Drive, Now-March 23

Help us repeat our victory over Lipscomb and provide books for children in our community. Buy any children's book, donate used books or scrounge around your house for old books during Spring Break! You're in college now kid... do you really need that old Dr. Seuss classic more than the children down the street who can't afford it? We think not.

Two collection bins will be available in the Beaman and the Massey Business Lobby from Feb. 23-March 23.

Donated children's books will be given to Book’Em, a local literacy organization that provides volunteer readers to local preschools, Head Start centers and elementary schools and that collects and distributes new books to children in lower-income families who might not otherwise have books of their own.

The Umkulo Coin War Begins Wednesday at the Caf

Unload your coins in the cafeteria to bring music education to African children! The residence hall that raises the most money between Feb. 25 and March 6 will win a free ice cream party with rocking live music! If you don't live in a dorm, bring your change anyway and know that you are providing music education to underpriveleged children halfway across the globe. The coin donations will support a Belmont-based organization, The Umkulo Project.

umkolo.jpgThe Umkulo Project’s mission is to alleviate the effects of poverty by providing the opportunity for African children to experience the hope that music education brings. Started by Chris Dorsey, a current Belmont student, The Umkulo Project supports a music education program for children in Cape Town, South Africa called the Mobile Music Academy. To learn more about the work being done there, go to www.umkulo.wordpress.com.

Rules:

1) The dorm that raises the most money PER PERSON wins the ice cream party. So, the smaller dorms have the same chance as the larger dorms.

2) Since it is a "Coin" war, coins help the tally go up & Dollar bills act as negative points bringing the tally down. So if you don't have change, throw a dollar bill in another dorm's box to bring them back down!

3) Tell everyone in your dorm to unload their change each day in the Caf! The only way to win is to pull together as an entire dorm. Plus, what's better than giving some musical love to amazing children in Africa?

4) The tally will be updated once daily at the booth in the cafeteria and also online at http://umkulo.wordpress.com.

5) There will be an Umkulo Rep at the booth during one meal each day to answer any questions, update the scoreboard, and give more information if you're interested in The Umkulo Project.
