Carry Belmont ID at All Times
Due to increased security, all students, faculty and staff are asked to carry their Belmont-issued IDs at all times starting today.

Neely and Black & White Dining Rooms Closed Sept. 26-Oct. 7
The Neely and Black & White Dining Rooms will be closed to events and thru traffic from Sept. 26-Oct. 7. The Shane Claiborne event scheduled for Neely on Wed., Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. will now be held at Belmont Heights Baptist Church.

Debate08 Walk Thru for the Belmont Community
Get an inside view of Debate08 on Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon. Belmont students, faculty, staff and neighbors are invited to an exclusive walk-thru of the Debate08 Media Filing Center (the temporary structure on the soccer field) and the set for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate in the Curb Event Center. In addition, you will be able to view a C-SPAN exhibit documenting the history of the American presidency in the Maddox Grand Atrium.

Mail Services
During Fall Break, the Mail Center will only deliver mail to Fidelity, Freeman, the Massey Business Center and the Inman Health Sciences Center on Mon, Oct. 6 and Wed., Oct. 8. There will be no mail delivery to campus on Tues., Oct. 7 but the Mail Center will be open regular hours.

Ken Burns: Telling the American Stories
Tues., Sept. 30, 7 p.m.
Ken Burns has been making documentary films for more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Stephen Ambrose, the historian, has said of Burns’ films, “More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source.” On Tues., Sept. 30, Burns will address his approach to “history” and his perspective on the American experience.

Sheryl Oring: What I Wish to Say to the Future President
Wed., Oct. 1, 10 a.m.
Nationally known performance artist Sheryl Oring will be on the Belmont campus with her characteristic typewriter and camera. Oring performs via an interactive project with her audience – any Belmont student or personnel who may pass by. She sets up her table and typewriter and types postcards dictated by participants on what they wish to say to the future President. A photographer is there to document this “performance.” This 10 a.m. lecture in MPAC will be followed by the noon-2:30 p.m. performance in the Gazebo. A 4:30 p.m. Gallery Talk in LCVA 121 will conclude Oring's visit to Belmont.

Tennessee and the Changing American Energy Landscape
Fri., Oct. 3, 4 p.m.
Join us for an evening to discuss how major energy-related institutions in Tennessee are responding to and helping resolve the energy challenges we face today. High ranking officials from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee Valley Authority, UT’s Biofuels Initiative and the Governor’s Energy Policy Task force will share their perspectives about this critically important issue. An audience question-and-answer session is encouraged after the presentation

The Declaration of Independence Comes to Tennessee
Oct. 4-6
A rare, original copy of the Declaration of Independence will be on public display at the Nashville Public Library Main Branch, 615 Church Street. The document will be in the library’s Conference Center on the first floor the entire weekend. Viewing hours are Saturday from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday from 2-5 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Admission is free. In addition to viewing America's founding document, visitors will also view a 10-minute video starring Reese Witherspoon that explains the history of the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence's visit to Tennessee is sponsored by Cricket Communications.

Vesper Service

You are invited to join President Robert Fisher of Belmont University for our Debate08 Vesper Service. Our homilist is Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, a citizens' anti-hunger movement which focuses on education about hunger and on influencing public policies on hunger and poverty. Please join us for refreshments following the service. Complimentary parking is available in several lots surrounding the church.

Voices from Darfur: Accounts by Refugees from the Darfur Genocide
Mon., Oct. 6, 7 p.m.
The Belmont University chapter of Amnesty International and the Belmont Coalition Against Genocide present Voices from Darfur, a national speaking tour featuring Darfuri refugees. Voices from Darfur features a short documentary film followed by a first-hand account of the genocide by survivor Daoud Hari and analysis by Jerry Fowler, president of the nation-wide Save Darfur Coalition. As many as 400,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million displaced. Join your fellow students at this important event to hear Voices from Darfur and learn how you can help end the genocide.
