Ken Burns Presents: Telling the American Stories Tuesday

Ken Burns has been making documentary filmsfor more than 30 years. Since the Academy Award-nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, he has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Stephen Ambrose, the historian, has said of Burns' films, "More Americans get their history from Ken Burns than any other source." Tuesday evening, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. in MPAC, Burns will address his approach to "history" and his perspective on the American experience.

This five-week immersion program includes homestays, Spanish classes, afternoon activities and excursions in Madrid and Galicia. Belmont University's Town Hall Presidential Debate Honorary Host Committee invites you to the Debate08 Viewing Party. Join us at the historic Ryman Auditorium to watch the televised presidential debate as it takes place at Belmont's Curb Event Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Denver and the Mile High Orchestra at 6:30 p.m. Debate begins at 8 p.m., and Spin Alley coverage will air until 10:30 p.m. Two complimentary tickets are available with your Belmont ID from Mon., Sept. 29-Fri., Oct. 3. Entry requires a ticket, and seating is limited. Students may pick up tickets in Belmont Central. Free SunTrust Plaza Building parking passes are also available while supplies last.

Disco is Dead? Fri., Sept. 26, 8-10:30 p.m.

The men of Alpha Tau Omega are proudly hosting their 15th annual "Disco is Dead?" campus wide social in the Curb Cafe on Fri., Sept. 26 from 8-10:30 p.m. Come dressed in your best disco attire, and be prepared to boogie the night away to hits from the '70s as well as today. A $1 donation will be taken at the door for admission, with the proceeds going to the Red Cross to benefit recent hurricane victims. This annual event has been named "Outstanding Campus Wide Social" two-years in a row. NPR Religion Reporter on Campus Wednesday

Barbara Bradley Hagerty, the religion correspondent for National Public Radio, will be speaking Wed., Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. in Neely. She reports on the intersection of faith and politics, law, science and culture, with stories ranging from the impeachment hearings of President Clinton to the Florida election to the DNA revolution. Barbara was the lead correspondent covering the investigation into the September 11 attacks. Her reporting was part of NPR's coverage that earned the network the 2001 George Foster Peabody and Overseas Press Club awards. She has appeared on the PBS programs "Washington Week in Review" and "The Lehrer News Hour." In her capacity as religion correspondent, Barbara received the 2004 Religion Newswriters Association award for radio reporting. Christian Faith Development convo credit will be given.

Family Literacy Day Committee to Meet Wednesday

The first meeting of the Family Literacy Day Steering Committee will take place on Wed., Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. in the first floor Conference Room of the Beaman Student Life Center, behind What's Bruin. All campus groups are encouraged to send a representative to be a part of the planning process for Belmont's 9th Annual Family Literacy Day, which will be held on Sat., April 4, 2009. Trip to Blackfriars Theatre in Virginia Nov. 14-16

Dr. James Wells (English) invites you to see American Shakespeare Company perform at the Blackfriars Theatre in Staunton, Virginia. We will see Twelfth Night, King Lear and Richard II in Blackfriars, which attempts to recreate the conditions and stage practices of Shakespeare's smaller indoor theatre. The shows are professional and highly entertaining. The price for the trip is $250 and includes reserved seating at three plays, a tour of the theatre, hotel accommodations (half a double room) and bus transportation. Beaman Center Update in Preparation for Debate08

Due to preparations for the Presidential Debate, the BSLC weight room will close Wed., Sept. 24 at 10 p.m. The BSLC Group Fitness Room, Recreational Gym, Racquetball Courts and Climbing Wall will remain open until Fri., Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. Beginning Sat., Sept. 27, the entire facility will be closed except for the Beaman lobby area, which will remain open through Tues., Sept. 30. PCAT Practice Test Sept. 26

Students will have an opportunity to learn more about Belmont's School of Pharmacy and to sharpen their exam skills by taking the PCAT practice tests. A Belmont student reported an intruder entered her Bruin Hills residence late Sunday night/early Monday morning. There was no sign of forced entry and nothing was taken from the residence. Metro police and Belmont security are aware of the situation, and the incident is being investigated.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 25

Health Services is forming a team of faculty, staff and students to participate in a five-mile walk for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, an annual event of the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and dollars to fight breast cancer. The event takes place on Sat., Oct. 25, beginning at 9 a.m. at LP Field/Titans’ Stadium. Anyone may participate either by walking, making a donation or organizing a fundraising activity. There is no registration fee, and students will receive two convo credits. Plan to wear your favorite Belmont T-shirt. Please register online at www.cancer.org/stridesonline, and find the 2008 walk in Nashville. Choose "Join a Team," and enter "Team Belmont" in the Team Name field (You do not need to enter a Team Company." Make sure you bring your Belmont ID the day of the walk. Bruin Blast Pep Band Auditions Sept. 23-24

Bruin Blast is the spirit band that performs at the Curb Event Center for all men's and women's home basketball games and selected events across the campus. Membership is open to all Belmont students through audition. Students receive a stipend for participation.

Positions are available for piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, mellophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, electric bass and drum set. Please come during the scheduled times. You will be asked to play two scales of your choice (two octaves each), the chromatic scale (two octaves) and a short sight-reading excerpt. Percussionists will be asked to play several common styles. School-owned instruments/equipment such as mellophone, baritone, tuba, drumset and bass amplifier will be available for use at the audition. Membership in Bruin Blast is open to students of all majors!

Rock The Vote with Melinda Doolittle on Saturday

Rock the Vote and Press Here are joining forces to design and produce The Road Trip, a non-partisan, state of the art, mobile road show which will target key youth markets and encourage voter registration for the upcoming election. The Road Trip will begin at Belmont University this Saturday, Sept. 13, with a performance from alumna and former "American Idol" contestant Melinda Doolittle. She will perform from 2-4 p.m. on the South Lawn (the area between the Curb Event Center and the Soccer Field).

Enter Ticket Lottery Now for Town Hall Presidential Debate

**September 13th - 8:15PM Update: the student lottery registration has ended **
In the event tickets are available for the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, preference will be given to Belmont students. Tickets will be won by lottery. A form is available on BIC that will enter you into that lottery. Sign in to BIC, and click the “Presidential Debate Ticket Lottery Registration for Students” on the Debate08 Update box. We will not know if, or how many, tickets will be available until two-three days before the debate. When that number is determined, you will be notified if your lottery number falls within the allotment. You may not be notified of an available ticket until the day before the debate. Multiple entries do not increase your chances at winning the lottery. The lottery itself will occur on Tues., Sept. 16 at 6:45 p.m. in Neely.

'Freedom Sings' Saturday at 7 p.m. in MPAC

Freedom Sings, the brainchild of The Freedom Forum First Amendment Center, is a critically acclaimed multi-media experience featuring an all-star cast of musicians and an "only-in-America" story line. Executive Leadership Program Applications Available

Ten Belmont freshmen are selected to participate in a year-long program in which they move through a series of various types of experiences as a cohesive unit learning about teamwork, leadership, communication, community service, organization and self- purpose. Topics to be included in the program: team building, communication skills, event planning, time management, self motivation, personal purpose and mission. Students will have the opportunity to network with campus administrators, current student leaders and community professionals. Students will be required to complete a series of tasks, including being given a budget and the necessary resources to create, plan and implement a campus-wide event/program for the Belmont community. Applications are available in the SGA Office (1st floor Beaman Student Life Center— across from the Rock Wall). Deadline for applications is noon on Wed., Sept. 10.

Alumni Showcase Sept. 20 to Benefit Shaohannah's Hope

"Coming Home for a Cause," the first annual Alumni Showcase on Sat., Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Curb Event Center will welcome back several talented alumni to perform at a benefit for the Shaohannah's Hope foundation. Co-sponsored by the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business and the Office of Alumni Relations, the showcase will feature Sam & Ruby, Abby Burke and the Manly Band, KingBilly and Andy Davis. Gospel artist Steven Curtis Chapman, a former Belmont student and Curb College Advisory Board member, and his wife Mary Beth founded Shaohannah’s Hope to care for orphans and to help more people experience the miracle of adoption by reducing financial barriers. For the "Coming Home for a Cause" benefit, Shaohannah’s Hope has specifically identified an 18-month-old orphan in China, John, who needs surgery for a cleft lip. Belmont’s donations will go directly towards John’s surgery. Buckets were distributed across campus last week to allow the Belmont community to participate and contribute to changing this orphan’s life. Student Health Services is offering flu clinics at your location for groups of 10 or more who want the flu vaccination Oct. 20-24 and Oct. 27-31 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The cost per shot is $16. Click on the Read More button to find out how to schedule a flu shot session.

Media Tent Construction to Impact Parking, Tennis Courts
Most of the credentialed media covering the debate will be stationed in the Media Filing Center, a temporary 25,000 square foot facility that will be built on the Belmont soccer field prior to the event. Construction of this facility will begin on Mon., Sept. 8. Due to the construction, beginning Fri., Sept. 5, all cars parked in spaces around the soccer field must be moved to other areas on campus. The areas that will need to be cleared for the media tent are Acklen Avenue, E. Belmont Circle, and the spaces on soccer field drive facing the soccer field. Additional parking is available at the Thrailkill parking garage during business hours as well as the gravel lot on 12th Avenue. We’d also like to remind everyone of both the free bus (MTA) and train (RTA) services for commuting to campus as well as Belmont’s new partnership with Zipcar. In addition, in order to protect the safety of the campus community and those working on the construction, the Belmont tennis courts will be closed beginning on Monday.

Fall Break 2008 and Campus Residence Halls
Per the email sent to Belmont students on July 22, residents of Kennedy, Wright, Maddox, Hail, Pembroke and Heron Halls, as well as the New Residence Hall, must inform Residence Life by close of business on Mon., Sept. 8 of their intent to remain on campus during Fall Break. Please keep in mind that campus conditions will be greatly altered during Fall Break, including the following:
• All rooms will be subject to search, and residence hall buildings may only be accessed by students living in them.
• There will be no Food Services available on campus during the entirety of Fall Break (Oct. 4-8). The BSLC and many outdoor facilities and spaces will be unavailable for community use. University Health and Counseling Services will be closed.
• By Fri., Oct. 3 close of business, both the Curb and Inman parking garages will need to be cleared. Parking will be available at Greer Stadium with regular shuttles to campus.

Belmont Is a Smoke-Free Campus

Belmont University is a smoke-free campus. All buildings are smoke-free. Smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas. Click here to view a map of designated smoking areas (a complete list of these areas is also provided at the end of this listing). Beginning in October, fees will be enforced for smoking outside of the designated areas ($25 for the first offense, $50 for the second offense and $100 for the third offense). The fourth offense involving a student will be referred to Student Affairs for disciplinary action. An employee's fourth offense will be referred to the employee's supervisor and the Office of Human Resources. Information on smoking cessation programs is available by contacting Belmont's Student Health Services.

Humanities Symposium Sept. 7-15 to Tackle 'Debate, Dissent and Dialogue'

As part of Belmont's year-long programming to celebrate the 2008 Town Hall Presidential Debate, the School of Humanities will be hosting its seventh annual symposium Sept. 7-15 on the topic "Debate, Dissent and Dialogue." Focusing on the nature of argument and language in discourse, especially political, highlights of the symposium include talks by Paterno Family Professor in Literature at Pennsylvania State University Dr. Michael Berube, Marshall College Writing Center Director Dr. Daniel Frick and Belmont alumnus and current Kent State University faculty member Dr. Masood Raja.

Shakespeare in the Park This Weekend

The Nashville Shakespeare Festival is presenting Coriolanus in Centennial Park this Thursday-Sunday. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., but you should arrive early for good seats. The show is free, but the Festival requests a $5 donation.

Belmont Wind Ensemble (Auditions for Clarinet, Tuba and Euphonium)

The Belmont Wind Ensemble has positions available for clarinet, tuba and euphonium. We seek players who have had strong high school band experience and wish to play challenging literature. Participation scholarships are available. For the first time ever, Belmont Intramurals is offering Water Balloon Dodgeball! All you need to do is find five friends, fill out a roster and turn it in to the Beaman Student Life Center! Rosters are due Sept. 5 with the informational meeting on Sept. 8 in the Beaman Student Life Center Conference Room. The event date is Sept. 11.
