Belmont Alum in Final 5 for Decca Record Deal

Belmont University alumnus Adam Ilami ('06) has been chosen as one of only five finalists in an online music competition sponsored by Gather.com in conjunction with Decca Label Group. The contest, titled "First Tracks: The Search for America's Best Musical Talent" has been going on for several weeks. It began with contestants entering original songs they had written and recorded, and fans voting for those entries online. Ilami made it through the first two rounds, landing in the top 100 and 25 respectively. The third round involved judging of the contestants' entries of two songs each by a celebrity panel that included label execs and artists from the current roster. They chose the top 5 and flew them to New York City last week to showcase for the label. The winner will be decided by a final round of fan voting that runs April 21-28. The grand prize will be a recording contract with Decca Label Group, an imprint of Universal Music Group (UMG), the largest label in the world. Voters are allowed to vote once per day per email address at the link below. Check out the video of Ilami's live performance in NYC of his song "Hangman." Loewen's gripping retelling of American history as it should, and could, be taught, Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong, has sold more than 800,000 copies and continues to inspire K-16 teachers to get students to challenge, rather than memorize, their textbooks. The book has been chosen as the common book for the 2008-09 First Year Seminar at Belmont. Loewen taught race relations for 20 years at the University of Vermont. He now lives in Washington, D.C., continuing his research on how Americans remember their past.

People who are depressed, even those considering suicide, don't always state the problem outright. But it's worth listening for the signs--according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the third-leading cause of death for people aged 18-25. Furthermore, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration estimates that for every one death by suicide, there are anywhere from eight to 25 suicide attempts. The Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network’s website (www.tspn.org/documents)offers a list of common warnings signs, as well as links to several suicide prevention resources. For people in a crisis situation, emergency care should be sought immediately by contacting the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) to speak with a crisis intervention counselor.
